Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Discontinuation General Information & FAQ

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Effective June 30, 2010, Microsoft will discontinue future development of Windows Essential Business Server (EBS), the infrastructure solution designed for midsize businesses.

Our decision to discontinue future plans for Windows Essential Business Server was based on several factors, but most notably in response to midsize businesses making a rapid shift towards technologies such as management, virtualization and cloud computing as a means to cut costs, improve efficiency, and increase competitiveness.  As it happens, those technologies are offered today through other Microsoft solutions, and midsized customers are adopting them, including Windows Server® 2008 R2, Microsoft® System Center, Microsoft Exchange Server, and the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS).

We believe that streamlining our server product portfolio will provide clarity for customers and partners to determine which option might be right for them.

I have EBS 2008 Premium and can’t find the SQL Server 2008 DVD in my kit?

The EBS Migration kit doesn’t contain the SQL media because EBS 2008 Premium edition customers already have the DVD and license right to run SQL on a separate server.

What EBS 2008 product key should I use to access the EBS 2008 Migration fulfillment site?

You need to use your EBS 2008 Management Server Physical product key.

Who should I contact if I have any questions on my order?

Each regional store has a Contact Us link that will provide customers an email address for support.

I have multiple licenses of EBS 2008.  Can I order multiple EBS Migration kits?

You can order one kit per license of EBS.  You will need to enter in your EBS 2008 Management Server Physical product key per order.  You can’t order multiple kits per key.

What languages are the EBS Kits localized in?

We localized the EBS Migration kits in the same languages EBS released in.  Even though some of the standalone components are localized in more languages, we are only offing the languages EBS 2008 were released in.  We also only offer the languages that correspond to that region.

NA: English and French

EMEA: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian

LATAM: English, Spanish and Brazilian

APOC: English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese Traditional and Chinese Simplified..

Can I use my EBS 2008 CAL suite for the standalone components?

EBS customers will be able to use their EBS 2008 CALs to access their EBS 2008 Server as well as instances of the standalone components which were included in EBS 2008, like Windows Server 2008 Standard, Exchange Server 2007 Standard, and EBS Premium users will also be able to access instances of SQL Server 2008 Standard.

What are you doing for EBS Volume Licensing customers who purchased Software Assurance?

EBS customers who purchased Software Assurance will be able to take advantage of the same offer listed above and will also receive next versions of individual software products from the suite.  For EBS 2008 Standard customers, those products include: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Exchange Server 2010 Standard, System Center Essentials Standard 2010 and Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010.  EBS 2008 Premium customers who have purchased Software Assurance will also be entitled to SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard edition.

I just bought EBS 2008.  Should I stop deploying it or move to another set of products?

There is no reason why you cannot or should not move forward and deploy it. Microsoft will continue to support EBS 2008 through the normal product lifecycle.  EBS 2008 is a suite that includes several individual products, each with different support lifecycles. So support will last through 2017 for some components and through 2018 for others. For more detailed information on the lifecycle for the EBS 2008 suite, customers can go to the Microsoft Support site.  If you acquired EBS 2008 with OEM hardware, contact the manufacturer of your server hardware that came with EBS 2008 for the OEM’s support policies.

Why are Microsoft Threat Management Gateway (TMG) and/or Forefront Security for Exchange (FSE) not included in the offer?

For licensing and fulfillment reasons it is necessary to provide the retail versions of all the standalone components from the suite. TMG and FSE are not available in the retail channel and therefore are not included in this offer. Interested customers can purchase them through Volume Licensing. More information can be found at the Microsoft Volume Licensing site

Will I be able to purchase more CALs for EBS 2008?

Yes, customers can continue to purchase EBS 2008 CALs from either the Microsoft Volume Licensing program or through Microsoft partners until June 30, 2013.

Where can I obtain more information?

Please visit www.microsoft.com/ebs for additional information and www.microsoft.com/ebs/en/us/migration-kit-tc-agreement.aspx for the terms and conditions.

Manage, Monitor, and Report: Implementing a Power Management Strategy with System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3

Normal 0 false false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Executive Summary

According to most experts, the IT industry contributes two percent of the world’s carbon emissions. Microsoft® is committed to reducing its own, and the global IT carbon footprint. Software and technology innovations from Microsoft enable people and organizations worldwide to reduce their impact on the environment. In addition to providing key technologies and solutions that help support ‘Green IT’ initiatives, many Microsoft customers can learn valuable lessons from the Microsoft IT deployment and management experience of those same solutions and technologies.

The purpose of this white paper is to describe how Microsoft IT (MSIT) successfully deployed Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 to provide a centralized power management solution to 165,000 physical client desktop and laptop computers across the enterprise. The paper shows how Microsoft IT leveraged System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 to implement a cohesive power management strategy that takes full advantage of the native power management features integrated into products such as Windows® 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista®.

By deploying Configuration Manager 2007 R3, Microsoft IT added centralized client power management tools and reporting functionalities to its existing Configuration Manager 2007 client management hierarchy. The solution builds on existing Configuration Manager 2007 capabilities, including software distribution and hardware inventory capabilities. Configuration Manager 2007 R3 provides centralized, console-based administration of power management settings and policies, and delivers robust power management reports.

With Configuration Manager 2007 R3, MSIT now has the ability to more deeply understand the current power settings environment, assess power saving opportunities, and centrally manage client system power settings. All of these capabilities help to realize energy and cost savings.

Intended for technical decision makers, and other IT professionals that are interested or involved in environmental sustainability, or Green IT initiatives, this paper describes the Configuration Manager 2007 architecture that Microsoft leveraged to enable the solution. This paper details the Configuration Manager 2007 R3 deployment, placing special emphasis on defining the power management strategy, and the realized benefits of implementing an enterprise-wide power management solution.

It is important to note that this document should not function as a deployment roadmap. Organizational operational environments differ, and the unique needs of individuals and operational criticalities should be considered. The goal is to define a suitable power management strategy that produces net power savings, without compromising user productivity.

Note: For security reasons, the sample names of forests, domains, internal resources, organizations, and internally developed security file names used in this paper do not represent real resource names used within Microsoft and are for illustration purposes only.
